Europa está prácticamente libre de armas, pero el nuevo Viceprimer Ministro de Italia y Ministro del Interior, Matteo Salvini, quiere cambiar esta situación. Al margen del reciente escenario de creciente temor y sensación de inseguridad, Salvini pretende perturbar la actual política europea, presionando a favor de un modelo estadounidense de libre acceso a las armas. Por el contrario, la UE, como consecuencia de los recientes ataques terroristas, propuso reforzar los controles sobre la adquisición y posesión de armas de fuego. La nueva directiva de la UE sobre la posesión de armas de fuego en Italia fue adoptada en septiembre de 2018 en una interpretación menos restrictiva, y se hizo más fácil comprar un arma para los ciudadanos italianos. El gobierno italiano también está tratando de reformar las leyes de autodefensa para permitir que los propietarios de viviendas se enfrenten a los intrusos y se defiendan con armas de fuego si es necesario. Las licencias de armas de fuego han aumentado un 13,8% en el último año, y se prevé que sigan creciendo. El apoyo de Salvini al lobby italiano de armas es un patrocinio de larga data. Italia es uno de los mayores exportadores mundiales de armas ligeras, con Beretta como buque insignia de este sector, que representa el 70% de las armas ligeras y deportivas producidas en la UE y el 40% de la producción mundial.
El objetivo de esta serie es investigar la relación entre los italianos y las armas a la luz de la reciente directiva sobre armas de fuego, a través de diferentes historias, personas y regiones.
Europe is largely gun-free, but the new Deputy Prime Minister of Italy and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini wants to change that. Riding the recent scenario of increasing fear and sense of insecurity, Salvini aims at disrupting the current European policy, lobbying for a US model of free access to arms. Oppositely, the EU, as a consequence of the recent terrorist attacks, proposed to tighten the controls on the acquisition and possession of firearms. The new EU directive on firearms possession in Italy was adopted on September 2018 in a less restrictive interpretation, and it became easier to buy a gun for Italian citizens. The Italian government is also trying to reform the self-defense laws to allow homeowners to confront intruders and defend themselves with firearms if need be. Firearms licenses have increased by 13.8% in the last year, and are projected to grow further. Salvini’s support for the Italian gun lobby is a long-standing patronage. Italy is one of the largest worldwide exporters of light weapons, with Beretta as the flagship of this sector, accounting for 70% of light and sporting weapons produced in the EU and 40% of world production.
The aim of this series is to investigate the relationship between Italians and weapons in light of the recent enforced firearms directive, through different stories, people and regions.
