PROJECT: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
It is the greatest humanitarian tragedy since World War II and the milestone that has marked this century. Millions of refugees reaching the shores of Europe fleeing violence, terror, death. Carrying only what they can in their arms and risking their lives in a desperate journey by land and sea, only to find a Europe with closed doors. A Europe that responds to this call for help with indifference and bureaucratic obstacles. The result: Millions of people living in jungles of mud, plastic and misery.
In “La Jungla”, the name that was set to the refugee camp in the French port city of Calais, survive between 4,000 and 6,000 souls who await their chance to cross the English Channel to Britain, the new promised land they hope, at least, not be persecuted and able to sleep with both eyes closed without fear of being attacked. However the wait promises to be long.
“Welcome to The Jungle” is the first chapter of “The last border”, an ongoing project to document the history of the greatest tragedy of our century. The Jungle of Calais is just the first stop of a trip that aims to explore the four hot spots for refugees in Europe: France, Morocco, Greece and Turkey. Now they can not move forward, and going back mean death. Everyone thought that this would be his final frontier.
